Step #1 – Identify Your Needs
Before you begin your search for the perfect nanny, it’s essential to identify your needs and preferences. Creating a very specific list of job responsibilities is an important practice for clearly communicating to potential candidates what the job entails. It’s not as simple as finding someone that is great with children. There is so much more that goes into selecting the perfect fit.
Questions to ask yourself:
- What is the schedule?
- Live-In, Live-Out, Full-Time, Part-Time?
- What is the salary or hourly rate?
- Will you offer any benefits?
Common benefits provided to a nanny include: medical, dental, and/or vision insurance or a healthcare stipend, 2 weeks paid vacation time, 2-5 sick days, federal holidays, 401k, gas mileage stipend, meals while working, room and board, work cell phone and bonuses.
- What is the location? Where will the nanny be caring for your child? Your home? A nanny share with a rotating schedule between two homes?
- Will they be asked to care for relatives’ children or supervise drop-off playdates? How frequently?
- Identify candidate requirements; CPR and first-aid certification, educational background, experience with your preferred parenting style, etc.
- What, if any, are the driving requirements?
- Do they need to drive children to/from school, playdates, grandparents house, activities, etc. If so, will they be driving their own vehicle or will you provide a vehicle? If they will be driving their own vehicle, you will need to pay mileage.
- Is cooking required?
- Will they be cooking for the entire family or only the children?
- Will they be required to prepare homemade baby food, etc?
- Are there any housekeeping duties?
- light housekeeping, such as family dishes, vacuuming, etc or simply tidying up after the children, organizing and cleaning children’s toys, stocking children’s toiletries, etc.
- Will they be responsible for the children’s laundry? How often would you like children’s linens to be changed?
- Will the nanny be responsible for grocery shopping? If so, how often and when? Will the nanny need to take the child with them to the grocery store? Or will they be able to arrive at the home an hour or so later one morning per week to allow a stop at the grocery store on their way to work to pick up groceries?
- What does the ideal daily routine look like? Will the nanny have the child fed and bathed before going off duty? Will the nanny stay until the child falls asleep? Does there need to be flexibility around the time they go off duty every night? How will that time be compensated?
- What is your parenting style? How would you like the nanny to handle behavioral issues? What type of discipline is appropriate in your household and for which behaviors?
There are a lot of details to consider before writing your nanny job post. It’s imperative you narrow in on your family’s needs BEFORE beginning this process. While it’s important to outline all of your needs first, your job post will be very concise and summarize the main points of the position. In order to secure the perfect fit for your family, you will clearly communicate all of the other details of the position to candidates during the interview process.
